Claire Danes is carving out a niche of her own playing the unstable woman in crisis—characters like the bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison in Homeland. In the new Netflix series, The Beast in Me, she is Aggie Wiggs, a tormented writer grieving the loss of her son. “I liked the idea of a writer being truly dangerous, and predatorial,” Danes said of the role in an interview with The Guardian. “I admired her mind, her intellectual integrity and her chutzpah and, ultimately, her depth of feeling.” Wiggs is obsessed with uncovering the past of her new neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), who is the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. What starts as one-sided fascination quickly turns into a psychological journey in pursuit of the truth. —Maggie Turner
