Tradition! Tradition! Like Tevye in Anatevka, parents in rural Bohemia knock themselves out with matrimonial plans for children, to little avail. The tangled romance of The Bartered Bride involves trickery, disguises, mistaken identities, to say nothing of a providential traveling circus. Audiences around the world have embraced Smetana’s salt-of-the-earth personalities and the infectious melodies they sing. Even so, a native Czech cast on home ground is sure to have an edge. —M.G.
