The tangled romance of The Bartered Bride involves trickery, disguises, mistaken identities, to say nothing of a providential traveling circus. Audiences around the world have embraced Smetana’s salt-of-the-earth personalities and the infectious melodies they sing. Even so, a native Czech cast on home ground is sure to have an edge. —M.G.
