A five-part docuseries on the founding of America has landed on Netflix, courtesy of Hollywood’s resident American history buff, Tom Hanks, who serves as the show’s executive producer. The series, directed by Brian Knappenberger, features interviews with politicians across the spectrum, including Hilary Clinton, Mike Pence, Kamala Harris, Ted Cruz, Nancy Pelosi, and Justice Stephen Breyer, as well as historians and Native American spokespeople. The subject is American democracy’s greatest ideals (guardrails against tyranny) and most damaging pitfalls (slavery). Highlights include Martin Sheen as the voice of George Washington and Hilary Clinton lambasting the electoral college, the mechanism that caused her to lose the 2016 election despite winning the popular vote. —Paulina Prosnitz
