Itamar Moses’s major breakthrough came in 2017, when The Band’s Visit, a musical adaptation of the hit Israeli movie, was nominated for Tony Awards in 11 categories. The show, which is about a group of Egyptian musicians who visit a small Israeli town, won 10. Moses took home the award for Best Book of a Musical. Now comes his long-awaited follow-up, The Ally. Premiering Off Broadway at the Public Theater, it focuses on a college professor, Asaf, whose student asks him to sign a social justice manifesto. His signature puts him smack in the center of a campus culture war. Lila Neugebauer directs. —Jensen Davis
