Brad Ingelsby, the creator of Mare of Easttown, has set the new HBO crime drama, Task, in a gritty Philadelphia suburb where bad news is routine. Brutal deaths don’t shock anyone, parents lie, and friends and colleagues betray each other. Head of a task force, Tom (Mark Ruffalo) is a priest turned FBI agent who prays in the mornings and reaches for vodka at night. His brother Robbie (Tom Pelphrey), stuck driving a garbage truck, moonlights as a burglar. Against this bleak backdrop—sharpened by Keith Cunningham’s production design and strong cinematography—their worlds collide in unexpected ways. —Elena Clavarino
