“Japanese people accept that art and commerce will be blended,” the acclaimed artist Takashi Murakami has said. “They are surprised by the rigid and pretentious Western hierarchy of ‘high art.’” True to his word, Murakami’s practice joins manga imagery with super-colorful graphics. The resulting work has Pop power, but also lightness and humor. In this exhibition, 18 works are on view. Highlights include the 32-foot-wide painting 100 Arhats (2013) and a sculpture from 1999, DOB in the Strange Forest—a rendering of Murakami’s anime-inspired character Mr. DOB. —Elena Clavarino
