This is the Frederick Ashton version of Sylvia, which premiered in 1952 at the Royal Opera House, London, fell out of repertory in 1965, and was wonderfully restored in 2004. The set and costume designs by Christopher and Robin Ironside, smoky cocktail pastels that suggest early Technicolor, are marvelous. And the ballet itself is a charming Wedgwood world of nymphs and hunts amid happy, happy boughs. Ashton style is a far cry from Mariinsky style, so it will be interesting to see how the Russians negotiate the contained elegance of English phrasing and épaulement. —L.J.
