In 1967, the incomparably elegant danseur noble, Erik Bruhn, choreographed a new Swan Lake for the National Ballet of Canada. He brought the ballet down to two acts, gave Siegfried an exceedingly poetic adagio solo in Act One, and substituted an evil Black Queen for the sorcerer Von Rothbart, which meant two powerful mother figures were imposing themselves upon the Prince. The production was considered controversial—Freudian!—but powerful. Karen Kain, the company’s current artistic director, was a very young ballerina when she first danced Odette-Odile in that Swan Lake. Now, in honor of the great Bruhn, who died in 1986, she’s brought the production back. New sets and costumes are by Gabriela Tylesova. —L.J.
