Young and pregnant, Nessa boards a flight in California that’s bound for New York. When she wakes up groggy and nauseous in an airport back room, she’s told she fainted during the flight and lost her baby. It turns out the plane made its emergency landing in Texas, and here Nessa finds herself under the watch of Val, an attorney appointed by the court to represent the fetus. The law in post-Roe Texas requires Nessa to carry the dead baby to term, despite the risks to her own health. Arlene Hutton’s urgent new play is about choices—“The choices that are taken from us and the choices we can still make.” Margot Bordelon directs, and Johanna Day and Meredith Garretson star. —Jeanne Malle
