In 1950, heading into the last decade of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Billy Wilder skewered the industry he loved in Sunset Boulevard. The film is about Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), an aging and forgotten silent-movie star who plots an impossible comeback from her mansion. The handsome but broke young screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) senses opportunity in her desperation. The actress becomes infatuated, and pretty quickly the writer is in over his head. In 1993, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black, and Christopher Hampton turned the classic film into a West End musical. Since then, a drumroll of divas have brought Norma to life onstage, beginning with Patti LuPone, in London, and Glenn Close, on Broadway. In this new West End production, Nicole Scherzinger, the former Pussycat Doll who starred in Webber’s 2015 production of Cats, steps into the storied role. —Jensen Davis
