Born in Brooklyn in 1934, Steve Schapiro fell in love with photography at an early age, inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s concept of a “decisive moment.” As this new documentary on Schapiro demonstrates, he sought those moments throughout his career, whether traveling the Deep South with James Baldwin in the 1960s or shooting the album cover for David Bowie’s Station to Station (1976) or taking behind-the-scenes photographs of The Godfather (1972) and The Way We Were (1973). Featuring interviews with Schapiro, who died in 2022 at the age of 87, the documentary vividly traces the photographer’s wide-reaching archive. Its director is Schapiro’s wife, the filmmaker Maura Smith. —Paulina Prosnitz
