In 2006, journalist Bob Woodruff was covering the war in Iraq when a bomb explosion nearly cost him his life. Once he recovered, he created a foundation that finds and funds non-profits that serve veterans. Every year, Woodruff’s foundation hosts Stand up for Heroes, a one-night comedy and music event that raises funds for post-9/11 armed servicemen and their families. This year’s show, the 13th, includes mainstays like Jon Stewart, who spoke to Congress this year in support of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and musician Bruce Springsteen, whose 1982 hit “Born in the USA” is a plea for Veteran aid. They are joined by surprise guests, and newcomers like breakout star Ronnie Chieng. —C.J.F.
