Landscape painting calls to mind a tradition as well as a view or vista. This exhibition is different. “Soulscapes” brings together works of Black landscape art. As James Baldwin said, “The place in which I fit will not exist until I make it.” And that’s what these varied visions do. With over 30 works in many mediums by artists of the African Diaspara—think Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Isaac Julien, Hurvin Anderson, and more—the “landscapes” in this show make room for Black experience, and, in fact, embody it. —Elena Clavarino
