Shinique Smith takes items that are thoughtlessly discarded—thrift-shop clothes, pottery, toys—and repurposes them into arresting art installations and colorful assemblages. “I’m trying to transform everyday materials into a more beautiful gesture that makes us think about our place in the world,” Smith has said. In an exhibition that includes works on paper by Brice Marden, Cecily Brown, Cy Twombly, Julie Mehretu, and Helen Frankethaler, a section of Smith’s display is dedicated to #TOGETHERBAND, an initiative that brings attention to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). —E.C.
