In the 1990s, when Shary Boyle was a young adult in Toronto, the city’s music scene was brewing some exciting new talent. As a rebel herself, Boyle immediately got involved in punk and hardcore. But she approached it from the design side, creating costumes, posters, and T-shirts for upcoming bands. The costume aspect of this work eventually led Boyle to question something deeper—issues of gender, sexuality, and identity, large topics of debate before the new millennium. In 1998, Boyle began playing around with a synthetic polymer clay. She molded the dough into quasi-figurative faces inspired by Greek mythology and charged with political meaning. Ever since, she’s worked across a variety of media that includes painting, installation, and drawing. In this exhibition, coming at a time when self-presentation is more relevant than ever, Boyle’s theatrical constructions of self are on view. —Elena Clavarino
