On August 5, 2018, the photojournalist Shahidul Alam was taken from his home in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and placed under arrest for spreading propaganda and false information. The arrest occurred shortly after he spoke out against the government’s violent response to student protests. He spent 107 days in jail before he was released on bail. A month later, Alam was named a Person of the Year by Time magazine. Pulling from a body of work built over 40 years, “Singed But Not Burnt” features Alam’s photographs of countless conflicts and catastrophes in his home country of Bangladesh. Unsparing in their honesty, the images are the byproduct of an artist and journalist who is unafraid of feeling the heat. —Paulina Prosnitz
