In a European free-jazz scene that aspires to permanent revolution, there is one inviolable tradition: the winter journey of this legendary trio, which has taken place every year since 1972. Though Paul Lytton has replaced Paul Lovens on drums, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach and saxophone colossus Evan Parker remain. The nod to Schubert is not frivolous: these men, too, are melodists, supplanting Franz’s trout with a myriad of wriggling, glimmering fingerlings. —E.E.
