Sara Cwynar, 39, has covered a lot of ground. She’s earned a design degree from Toronto’s York University, an MFA in photography from Yale University, and was a freelance graphic designer for The New York Times. Her practice—which includes book-making, installation, photography, and collage—has won attention. Last year, the filmmaker Sofia Coppola stopped by Cwynar’s studio in Brooklyn to interview her for the Fall 2023 issue of Gagosian Quarterly. When Coppola asked the artist to share her views on success, Cwynar answered: “Just like anyone else, I don’t want to fail, but I’m also not paralyzed by the possibility of failure.” For her 13th solo show at 52 Walker, Cwynar has created a digital video that will be projected at a monumental scale. It centers around a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the most expensive car ever to be sold at auction. —Elena Clavarino
