São Paulo Symphony Orchestra / The Amazon Concert: Sights and Sounds of Brazil

October 15, 2022
881 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019, USA

Looking back on a seven-year tenure as the music director of Brazil’s São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop—now swathed in the mantle of “Conductor of Honour”—presides over the ensemble’s two-evening Carnegie Hall debut. “The Amazon Concert: Sights and Sounds of Brazil” is the second program, showcasing multiple composers “as images of the Amazon flash above the stage, as seen through the eyes of its myriad species.” Oh, to see that fabled region as river dolphins do, or jaguars, or anacondas, or the exotic hoactzin, whose chicks hatch with claws on their wing digits! The polymath and curator Marcello Dantas—professionally trained in diplomacy, art history, film, and telecommunications—is the mastermind of this extravaganza, which promises to be simply phenomenal. —Matthew Gurewitsch
