Now in its 65th year, Salone del Mobile is the premier high-end design trade fair. Launched in 1961 to promote Italian furniture exports, the fair now attracts over 370,000 visitors. This year, it features more than 1,900 exhibitors (Who says Milan isn’t the contemporary design capital of the world?), and sustainability is the focus. “The strength of the Salone has always lain in its ability to act as a system,” said Maria Porro, the fair’s president. “Not just an event, but a cultural and economic infrastructure in constant transformation.” With new spaces for high-end limited design such as Salone Raritas, the fair continues to innovate, while staying close to its original imperatives. —Maggie Turner
