When Colin Trevorrow directed Safety Not Guaranteed, in 2012, he probably didn’t expect the film to be turned into a musical. His science fiction comedy, starring Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass, is about a cynical girl who’s interning at a small magazine: she is tasked with finding the person who placed an ad seeking a companion with whom to time travel. “This is not a joke,” the ad reads, “You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED.” The movie has now been reimagined as an indie-rock musical with original songs by Ryan Miller and a book by Nick Blaemire. Nkeki Obi-Melekwe and Taylor Trensch star, and Lee Sunday Evans directs. —Jeanne Malle
