At the time of his death, in 1997, Roy Lichtenstein’s visual signature was imprinted upon the world—the comic-book blondes, thick outlines, speech bubbles, and Ben-Day dots. Born in 1923, Lichtenstein would have turned 100 last October, and centennial celebrations are taking place this season. In the Albertina retrospective, 90 Lichtenstein works from museums around the world include early paintings from the 1960s, the iconic black-and-white paintings, enamel-technique landscapes, and the artist’s nods to Picasso, Dalí, and Pollock. You won’t be able to miss the gigantic Brushstroke sculpture that towers over the central exhibition space. —Elena Clavarino
