Ludwig van Beethoven wasn’t the seafaring type. He may have seen salt water from the Dutch shore at Scheveningen in his early teens, but if so, the experience seems to have terrified rather than inspired him. Still, given his sense of the sublime, it’s hard to suppose he would not have thrilled to the coast of Western Norway, with landscapes as dramatic as any on the planet. The local master of the keyboard Leif Ove Andsnes, who directs a chamber music festival in Rosendal, on the remote Hardanger Fjord, had planned to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth there in 2020, but you know what came of that. Better late than never! This summer’s all-Beethoven program includes 10 star-studded concerts spread over four long Northern days, plus lectures and other events. —Matthew Gurewitsch
