Over the course of his 50-year career, the English cinematographer Roger Deakins has helped create some of Hollywood’s most successful films, from The Shawshank Redemption (1994) to Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Along the way he’s won two Academy Awards and five BAFTAs. Back before Deakins was an award-winning, knighted cinematographer, he took still photographs, a practice he has maintained through the decades. The resemblance between his cinematography and his stills—ordinary moments, simply composed, taken in natural light—is striking. As Deakins has said, “There’s nothing worse than an ostentatious shot.” —Paulina Prosnitz
