Richard Estes is a photorealist. He paints from photographs and produces canvases of New York storefronts, diners, and bus windows that are so precise they’re often mistaken for photographs. For decades he has been taking his own reference pictures, using them as the basis for paintings and then setting them aside. Now, alongside his paintings of New York and Maine, Schoelkopf Gallery is presenting those photographs as finished works in their own right. “My camera is like my sketchbook really,” he has said. “In a way, showing these photographs is like revealing my process.” —Elena Clavarino
