Having presented “Anxious Red Drawings” online during the first months of the coronavirus lockdown, Black artist Rashid Johnson continues to work on themes of anxiety and escapism. “I am interested in how these recurring themes are able to pivot in order to speak to the times we live in,” he says. For this exhibition, Johnson has created mosaic paintings out of fractured ceramic, shell, mirrored tiles, and more. The geometrical figures in these paintings hark back to his “Broken Man” series, and suggest a bewildered, bugged-out humanity. The exhibition fills the entirety of both of Hauser & Wirth’s London galleries. —E.C.
