Radical Figures: Painting in the New Millennium

July 14 – Aug 30, 2020
77-82 Whitechapel High St, Shadwell, London E1 7QX, United Kingdom

An exhibition tackling “painting in the new millennium” may sound rather vague, especially when the work on view comes from artists as disparate as Dana Schutz, whose contorted figures are a point of departure into the unconscious, and Tschabalala Self, whose canvases, inspired by the streets of Harlem, often mix paint, prints, and fabric. Unifying this exhibition’s diverse cast of characters, though, is a shared enthusiasm for a medium that was pronounced dead in the 1980s. Not so, these artists argue. Painting in the new millennium is alive and here to stay. —J.V.
