“He’s never attempted to be Freddie, and I think that’s what endears him to the fans,” Queen guitarist Brian May has written of Adam Lambert. May first heard the singer crooning Queen on “American Idol” in 2009. He was blown away by Lambert’s range and his interpretations of Freddie Mercury’s vocal stylings. Lambert lost “Idol” but he won a place in Queen. Queen and “Madame Lambert,” as he is now lovingly called by fans, are touring America (with a stop in Toronto) through August 23. —C.J.F.
