In the 1980s, when the U.S. was suffering from an economic crisis, the Syrian-Jewish textile importer Jose Mugrabi was talking to the right people. Jeffrey Deitch, at the time a Citibank art consultant, convinced Mugrabi to invest in Pop art masters. He went on to build a collection that included 800 works by Andy Warhol. Forty years later, the family is worth an estimated $5 billion. This exhibition brings works from the Mugrabi collection to Australia for the first time. It’s also the museum’s first blockbuster show. Along with the Warhols, expect to see the art of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Mickalene Thomas, and George Condo. —Elena Clavarino
