Pierre Bonnard did not paint from observation but from memory. “I haven’t lived with that long enough to paint it,” he was known to say. Up in his studio, images of people and things came to his canvas in a coalescence of color. As the scholar Dita Amory has written of Bonnard, “In the late masterpieces, color becomes the subject, the vehicle of light, and the means by which we enter the paintings with our eyes.” This exhibition is Austria’s first comprehensive retrospective on Pierre Bonnard. —L.J.
