Refusing to buy into the increasingly commercialized art world of the 1970s and 80s, Peter Hujar—who died in 1987 at age 53—paid for his artistic integrity with anonymity. And yet, he made portraits of celebrated contemporaries—Susan Sontag, Andy Warhol—and was himself the favorite of one of photography’s greats, Richard Avedon, who mentored Hujar and went on to purchase eight of the 12 photographs on display here. The Pace exhibition is a long overdue celebration of Hujar’s singular genius, and a scholarly look at the influence of Avedon’s teaching. —C.J.F.
