Between 1963 and 1967, the artist Paul Thek was consumed with meat. During those four years, Thek sculpted multiple realistic slabs of abject, putrefying protein. In this wide-ranging exhibition on Thek’s career, his 1966 Untitled (Meat Piece with Chair)—a wax and bronze sculpture that looks like a rotting hunk of whale flesh encased in plexiglass—is featured. Paintings on view include his 1969 Untitled (Diver), an acrylic painting on newspaper of a red figure plunging into a blue abyss, and Thek’s late-career 1980s abstract oil-on-canvas works. There’s a bonus: the exhibition also includes photographs of Thek at work, images taken by his pal Peter Hujar, the American photographer who was later beloved for capturing the physical and emotional toll of AIDS, the disease that killed Thek. —J.D.
