How often does one get the chance to see Patti Smith perform live? The answer: These days, not often. I’ve seen her live once. She played a set at Elizabeth Street Garden on a sunny afternoon, appearing along with Nikolai Fraiture, bass player of the Strokes, and other special guests. The 100 or so people lucky enough to attend sat in circles on the grass and listened to Patti sing and play. It’s something I’ll always remember. That said, I’m sure seeing her on a real stage with big amps and a full band is even better. Smith’s performance at the Beacon Theatre is a great chance to do that.
