Inspired by spiritual and philosophical traditions from the East, the artist Pat Steir regards painting as a form of meditation, a deepening of consciousness. As Chinese masters did, she depicts landscapes in abstract form, throwing or pouring oil, ink, and tempera on paper or canvas in an echo of elemental forces. The gravitational arc and fall of fluids is complex, an image of nature’s spontaneity—and an act of spontaneity itself. The oil-on-canvas paintings in this exhibition are part of Steir’s acclaimed “Waterfall” series, and were made in 2019. —E.C.
