Antoinette Nwandu’s play is inspired by Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, the book of Exodus, and two of her former students at a New York community college. Its 2017 premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre became a talking point around a white theater critic’s possible race-based bias, and Spike Lee filmed it for Amazon Prime. Now, Toronto’s impressive Obsidian Theatre is producing the Canadian premiere of Pass Over. —K.F.
