“Lots of people’s lives are thrown together in my pictures,” the British artist Eileen Cooper has said. “But there is also a strong sense of separateness. I find it fascinating that, in the busy lives that everyone leads, people have a sense of their own time, their own moments of reverie.” Cooper depicts these moments of reverie in her paintings. Her figures are bold, outlined in a way that recalls Manet, and they often seem more creaturely than human, engaged in odd activities like climbing a tree or resting on the ground. Cooper’s work became known in the 1980s, when she started teaching at St. Martins, Royal College of Art. She is now 69. This exhibition presents 40 artworks that span her 40-year career. —Elena Clavarino
