Those who watched Dopesick (2021) will be familiar with the characters and plot points of Netflix’s new show Painkiller. Both series tell the creation story of America’s opioid crisis, zeroing in on the Sackler family, whose company Purdue Pharma created the highly addictive painkiller OxyContin and then marketed it to doctors as low risk for addiction. If this were a fictional story—and it is so shocking it feels as though it could be—it wouldn’t need to be told twice. But it’s not fiction. Purdue Pharma turned well-meaning doctors into pushers, and in the process destroyed lives, families, and communities. Matthew Broderick, as the amoral Richard Sackler, stars alongside Uzo Aduba and Taylor Kitsch in this six-part condemnation of greed, deceit, and American enterprise at its worst. —Clara Molot
