A full evening of Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887–1959), by acclamation South America’s preeminent classical composer. Among his most distinctive works are the series Bachianas Brasileiras, rooted in the music of J. S. Bach, and Chôros, inspired by the African- and Indian-inflected street music (literally “cries,” in the sense of lamentations) of his native Brazil.
