A full evening of Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887–1959), by acclamation South America’s preeminent classical composer. Among his most distinctive works are the series Bachianas Brasileiras, rooted in the music of J. S. Bach, and Chôros, inspired by the African- and Indian-inflected street music (literally “cries,” in the sense of lamentations) of his native Brazil. This four-part program showcases both categories, with dance complementing the opening and closing entries. —Matthew Gurewitsch
