Open Roads: New Italian Cinema

May 30 – June 6, 2024
150 West 65th Street, New York, NY 10023, United States

While most American film buffs are familiar with the Italian director Luca Guadagnino—the man behind I Am Love, Call Me by Your Name, and most recently, Challengers—many excellent Italian films have not made it across the Atlantic. Last year, for instance, Giuseppe Fiorello directed Fireworks, a story of two teenage boys who become lovers in 1980s Sicily. The 2022 movie Dry, directed by Paolo Virzì, features a group of self-absorbed present-day Romans who navigate a city on the brink of catastrophe. Organized by Film at Lincoln Center in collaboration with Cinecittà, the Italian capital’s largest movie studio, “Open Roads” offers seven days of recent Italian film—including Ginevra Elkann’s I Told You So, Edoardo de Angelis’s The War Machine, Paola Cortellesi’s There’s Still Tomorrow—and many more U.S. debuts. Viewing will be followed by discussions with several of the filmmakers. —Elena Clavarino
