Omar Ba’s paintings are imbued with poetic intensity. The Senegalese artist was born in Dakar, but today moves between cities on four continents—Brussels, Dakar, Geneva, New York, and Paris. His canvases combine organic acrylic, gouache, pencil, and typex to create surrealist portraits of African leaders. Some are sinister warlords, others are folkloric figures. Ba also draws from antiquity, recreating ancient imagery of Egyptian pharaohs. In this exhibition, 20 large-format canvases are on view. —Elena Clavarino
