When Abigail and Shaun Bengson brought their two-person musical to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer, critics were taken aback by just how much they loved it. Here was a tiny production put on by a married indie-folk duo, both of whom are autistic. They were telling Shaun’s story: growing up in rural Ohio and then leaving it, saying goodbye to the Lutheran church and finding a home in music, and later facing the devastation of acute degenerative hearing loss. What moved audiences was not just the story but the way it was told, from creative captions to microphone tricks that immersed viewers in the disorienting experience of losing sound. Picked up by the producers of Fleabag and Baby Reindeer, who are currently putting on Weather Girl at St. Ann’s Warehouse in New York, Ohio has now transferred to London’s Young Vic. —Jeanne Malle
