Among Gen Z’s disaffected youth—the “sad girl generation,” to be exact—the singer Mitski has reached meteoric TikTok fame. In 2019, after releasing her fifth album the year before, she announced her latest show would be her last. “It’s time to be a human again,” she tweeted. But since then, Mitski has released two more albums. And now a new one, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, comes out this Friday, again voicing that longing for anonymity. Inspired by similar despondent ballads—for instance, Eric Carmen’s 1975 hit “All by Myself”—Mitski finds comfort in isolation. According to her publicist, she has refused all written interviews about the album. The music will speak for itself. —Maggie Turner
