Taika Waititi’s sports comedy Next Goal Wins wrapped filming almost four years ago and is only now being released. It stars Michael Fassbender as a temperamental but knowledgeable Dutch soccer coach, whose on-field displays of rage have rendered him all but unemployable. With hopes of rehabilitating his anger, soccer’s high counsel sends him off to American Samoa, where he’s tasked with reforming the island country’s national team. The movie is based on real source material, and highlights Jaiyah Saelua, the first transgender player to participate in a World Cup game. Though the plot doesn’t stray far from the typical “underdog” sports narrative, strong performances from Fassbender, Kaimana, Oscar Knightley, and Rachel House bring levity and drama to a remarkable true story. —Jack Sullivan
