In 1992, the New York-based violist Leslie Tomkins and pianist Michael Barrett founded the Moab Music Festival, presenting programs in scenic open-air locations scattered among the waterways and primordial red rocks of Utah. This year, Tomkins and Barrett hand the reins to the violinist Tessa Lark, whose tastes are as inclusive as their own. A native of Richmond, Kentucky, Lark takes as readily to Mozart as to bluegrass, not to forget contemporary voices, from whom she has commissioned quite a bit. Audiences arrive variously on foot in hiking boots or by riverboat, sometimes at unaccustomed hours of the day. Food and drink are very much part of the package. We’re guessing that Lark will know better than to try to reinvent Tomkins and Barrett’s just-about-perfect wheel, even as she gives their winning formula her own personal spin. —Matthew Gurewitsch
