Mirror Mirror: Cultural Reflections in Fashion

Oct 9, 2021 – Apr 18, 2022
3 Park Drai Eechelen, 1499 Luxembourg

Fashion has always been emblematic of societal change. In the early 2000s, for instance, fashion trends reflected an increasingly interconnected world, the result of globalization and internet expansion. The Mudam, which collects with an eye for interdisciplinary affinities, draws from its holdings in contemporary fashion for Mirror Mirror. The designers include Hussein Chalayan, Helmut Lang, Hiroaki Ohya, Walter Van Beirendonck, and Junya Watanabe, and the elimination of gender, plus a diversity of references, emerge as pivotal themes. The showstopper is Chalayan’s Afterwords (Autumn/Winter 2000), which sees a living room of four slipcovered chairs transformed into four postmodern dresses with matching wooden suitcases. The coffee table turns into a skirt. —E.C.
