“Get in, loser, we’re going shopping.” To refresh the minds of those who may have forgotten this line, it’s from Tina Fey’s 2004 screenplay for Mean Girls, which she transformed into a musical that premiered in 2017, and has transformed once more into a movie musical. Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., the adaptation retains the hit comedy’s plot: Cady Heron, a new student, is accepted into the popular girls’ clique, ruled by queen bee Regina George. But things get more complicated for Cady when she falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend. Targeting Gen-Z, Fey’s adaptation is injected with TikTok, Olivia Rodrigo, and Barbie Pink. Reneé Rapp, from The Sex Lives of College Girls, stars as Regina George alongside Angourie Rice as Cady Heron. Busy Phillips, Jon Hamm, and Ashley Park play supporting roles. —Jeanne Malle
