According to Interview magazine, the American artist Mark Ryden is the “god-father of pop surrealism,” though one might also think of him as E. T. A. Hoffmann by way of Walt Disney. Born in 1961, Ryden graduated from design school in 1987 and then began to work commercially, designing album covers. His first solo show of paintings, in 1998, established his weird world of doll faces, candy colors, and surreal settings, daring us to call it kitsch. Ryden’s large canvases rework centuries of art history and harbor hidden depths. In this exhibition, bronze sculptures and drawings are the focus. The works center around the mysterious entity of Yakalina, a furry animal with an upright conical body. —Elena Clavarino
