Mario Testino: Gone Wild

Mario Testino, Acinonyx jubatus, Kenya, 2023.

“Gone Wild,” the latest chapter of Mario Testino’s ongoing series “A Beautiful World”—a photography project that captures vibrant slices of life across the globe—focuses on exotic animals. These images are as glamorous and couture as any luxury fashion shoot. Leopards and parrots pose and preen like models, their patterned furs and feathers alive with color. The tableaux are grand and sensuous, similar to a Baroque painting, though unlike a painting the subjects seem on the brink of escaping the frame. “It’s almost like a cowboy that draws his gun,” the Peruvian artist once said about photography. “You draw a second before or after, you miss and you’re dead.” —Paulina Prosnitz
