When the late Austrian artist Maria Lassnig painted herself, she only drew those parts of her body she could feel while she worked. She explained it as an internal representation—versus an external one—and she called the technique “body awareness.” The resulting images are thus abstract, but often with a surreal or ghostly quality. The works on paper and canvas in this virtual display were made between 1987 and 2005. —E.C.
