Fourteen years after Bernie Madoff was arrested for orchestrating one of the largest Ponzi schemes in the history of Wall Street, there are still several questions left unanswered. We know that he stole and then lost $65 billion from over 40,000 investors. We know that names on that list include the New York Mets, Larry King, and Kevin Bacon. But according to the new four-part Netflix series Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street, there are some important names missing. Director Joe Berlinger details Madoff’s Mob connections (he was allegedly managing a large chunk of money for international organized crime) and how they may have influenced the events that took place after the Ponzi-schemer’s December 2008 arrest. Berlinger suggests that Madoff, worried about a Mob hit, pleaded guilty and accepted a 150-year prison sentence as an attempt to save his own life. Watch video footage of Madoff discussing potential deals with the federal government, and see how he was selfish even in his decision about his ultimate demise. —Clara Molot
